For the past two decades, Hemlock has taken a proactive stance towards protecting our Ancient & Endangered forests. We are proud to continue this long-standing tradition through our ZERO Carbon Neutral Printing Program, by announcing a partnership with North American-based paper manufacturer, Domtar. This collaboration is rooted in responsible forest management and conservation by enabling customers to select Lynx® Opaque Ultra 30% Recycled, which is now automatically carbon neutral and made from 30% post-consumer recycled fiber as compared to Lynx’s standard 0% and optional 10% recycled substrates.
Hemlock’s ZERO program continues to grow its environmentally progressive and carbon neutral papers in large part due to the ongoing guidance from Offsetters and collaboration with mills such as Domtar. The addition of Domtar’s Lynx Opaque Ultra 30% Recycled further emphasizes how important products holding the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certification and made from post-consumer waste are to any supply chain.
“When Domtar approached us with a strong interest in our ZERO program, we immediately saw another great opportunity to further embed sustainability within our paper supply chain” remarked Hemlock’s President, Richard Kouwenhoven. “By working with Domtar, we are able to significantly increase the accessibility of carbon neutral products among our customers and the wider community. Looking ahead, we are excited to participate in more collaborations that emphasize our most environmentally progressive offerings.”
Domtar’s manufacturing process at its Windsor, Quebec mill illustrates how the principles of a circular economy work. Trees are harvested through responsible forest practices and sent to the mill to make pulp and paper. Residual bark is used to produce steam for the turbine generator that produces electricity sold to Hydro Quebec to power homes. The mill also returns manufacturing by-products in the form of fertilizer to enrich the soil of the forests it manages, which enhances the growth of the next generation of trees.
“Domtar is pleased to collaborate with Hemlock Printers in creating a carbon neutral paper that promotes forest stewardship and delivers value for everyone working toward a low-carbon world,” stated Paige Goff, Domtar’s Vice-President of Sustainability. “Canada has one of the highest rates of recovered paper in the world and Hemlock’s addition of our Lynx Opaque Ultra 30% Recycled paper contributes to that story of product circularity, thriving forestland biodiversity and the wellbeing of nature and people.”
This 100% carbon neutral sheet also offers Hemlock’s customers across North America high quality and cost-effective options with Lynx Opaque Text sheets and rolls that meet the needs of both offset and digital print projects.
