2017’s wrap is dedicated to Dick Kouwenhoven.
2017 was an eventful year at Hemlock, which included the unexpected passing of our founder, good friend, and colleague, Dick Kouwenhoven.
Shortly after Dick’s passing, our long-time colleague and customer, Gay Lam, at Seltzer Goods, proposed an idea to celebrate Dick’s heritage, lifestyle, and passion for our industry.
“Remembering Dick Kouwenhoven” is the theme of this year’s wrap, and in keeping with tradition, we’ve continued to combine the talents of a leading designer with our own technical team, continually exploring innovative processes using a variety of substrates and techniques.

The Case
We stepped up the thickness from last year, plus added a nice cap. It’s a C1S sheet (that’s a TLA for “Coated One Side”). With some engineering, both the case and the cap are interlocking, no glue is used in the forming and converting of the case.
Production details: UV CMYK process plus PMS 9441 with a High-Build Coating on the snow and windows.
Substrate: 24pt Carolina Cover C1S, one of our preferred sheets for packaging and folding carton projects.
Press: Heidelberg 106 UV, 6 colour, plus a “high build” gloss UV coating, applied with a flexo plate. Both print and effect completed in a single pass.
If you’re wondering, what the heck is a TLA, it’s short for “Three Letter Acronym”.
Sticker Sheet
The gift tags and stickers have been very popular for a number of years. For those who find it frustrating when prying hands sneak a peak at a well thought out gift, adhesives have improved, once you stick these, consider your gift fully tamper proof.
Production details: CMYK process plus PMS 485 one side. Kiss cut die for shapes.
Substrate: 60lb. Spinnaker FasTrack Matte, This substrate is also available in a gloss finish. Technical tip, if you need to write on it, best to specify the matte finish.
Press: Heidelberg SM 52, 6 colour, with aqueous coater.
Tickets
The collage of tickets, represents Dick’s original trip across Canada which started in Montreal in 1965. The sheet is a reproduction of those vintage tickets, printed on uncoated substrates that were common at the time. Even today heavy coverage on uncoated paper can have it challenges with rub resistance and drying. Printing UV does reduce risk, however in this case to completely eliminate rub, we added a clear UV varnish on top of the PMS red.
Production details: UV CMYK process plus PMS 485 (red) with a UV Spot Gloss Varnish on the background. Produced in a single pass.
Substrate: 70lb Mohawk Via Smooth Text 100% PCW, a great sheet that can handle heavy ink coverage and meet those with high expectations.
Press: Heidelberg 106 UV, 6 colour.
Hemlock Sprigs
Two standouts here:
BACKGROUND GREEN: Years ago, we would have opted for a PMS formulation to avoid technical challenges. Today, our Heidelberg XL, with its reengineered inking system means the CMYK builds are completely fine for large areas of heavy coverage.
SPOT GLOSS HIGH BUILD: Impress your friends and use the industry’s new buzz word “embellishing”. Applied here to the wood rings, it adds a level of dimension. Unique in this application, it’s applied to text weight paper, not a process for the meek.
Production details: UV CMYK process plus PMS Warm Grey 6 with a UV Spot High-Build Coating on the fine lines of the wood grain.
Substrate: 70lb Pacesetter Gloss Text, 10% PCW
Press: Heidelberg 106 UV, 6 colour, with UV / UV coater
PS. Dick was passionate advocate of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council). In addition to being a key early adopter, Dick was an FSC board member and contributed to numerous industry initiatives focused on environmental sustainability.
Dutch Tiles
Celebrating Dick’s birthplace, the Netherlands, specifically the little town of Delft, is a tile reproduction. Not every sheet of paper should be flooded with ink, we sometimes neglect the tactile feel of virgin paper. On this sheet, we left it virtually untouched and only applied a small amount of grit to the “grout” areas.
Production details: UV CMYK process with a UV Spot Grit coating applied with a flexo plate mounted on the coater. All done in a single pass through the press
Substrate: 70lb Pacesetter Gloss Text, 10% PCW
Press: Heidelberg 106 UV, 6 colour, plus coating.
Hemlock Bake Sale
This sheet recognizes a tradition here at Hemlock, our annual fundraising bake sale as well as Dutch baked delicacies, pictured here a few of Dick’s favourites. Printed with a traditional CMYK ink sequence, we added a scented varnish, one of 60 stock scents available as a clear varnish overprint. The actual scent we used is secret at this time. It was applied here in a spot application to the “HEMLOCK HOLIDAY BAKE SALE” cookie.
Production details: UV CMYK process with a Spot Scented Varnish.
Substrate: 70lb Pacesetter Gloss Text, 10% PCW
Press: Heidelberg 106 UV, 6 colour, plus coating.
OK, enough time has passed, the scent is Gingerbread!
Mountain Bike Ride
Printed on an uncoated sheet, we’ve pushed the limits of the high build gloss coating. To minimize absorption into the substrate we apply a base sealer under the high build. This minimizes absorption and allows for maximum relief.
True to Dick’s heritage, biking was key throughout his entire life. Whenever time allowed, he’d be on a trek, 50 kilometers wasn’t out of the norm.
Production details: UV CMYK Process plus PMS 9441 with a UV Spot High-Build Coating on the bears and trees.
Substrate: 70lb Mohawk Via Smooth Text, 100% PCW
Press: Heidelberg 106 UV, 6 colour, plus coater
Letterforms
The sheet is a testimonial to typography, a skill and passion of Dick’s throughout his entire career. Classic typography, serif and san serif, classic and modern. Here we’ve supplemented letters with Orange ink, recognizing all things Dutch.
Production details: UV CMYK process plus PMS 821 (blue) and fluorescent PMS 811 (orange).
Substrate: 70lb Mohawk Via Smooth Text, 100% PCW
Press: Heidelberg 106 UV, 6 colour, plus coating.
